i don’t know why gpsbabel is masked unstable in gentoo but it made me find this wiki page containing the nice and handy shellscript ‘gimme’. saves some time (i always forget which file in /etc/portage i have to put my ~x86 packages into).

here it is once again. you see, if for example you want to use it on ppc, then change that ~x86 there.

gps for google map

the last post on that, i remember, i wrote that when we were in mysore. time has passed, i found the setting “track modus” “auto detailled” in my magellan marine, used it for a while, continue to copy and paste my tracklogs from notepad to vim, gpsbabel them and then use gpsphoto with different –maxtimediffs. the results: not so really overwhelming. i go up to 500 seconds, sometimes up to 2000 and still gpsphoto does not match all the photos i took on that same trip.
i’d like to get a lowrance ifinder once to try out the differences. the ifinder unfortunately does not put timestamps into the tracklog. (there are rumours that they might release another firmware that adds this feature but those were rumours when i needed a gps). thats why i bought the magellan.
but there is an option to have the ifinder log the position in a given interval, say, 2 minutes. and it can write up to 10 000 points into the log. you could write down the starting time of your tracklog every time you want to match it with the exif data of your photos and write a script that adds the missing timestamps to your tracklog (or, still easier, to the gpx file). can you use waypoints to save the starting time of your tracklog? are there other ways of getting by without writing on pieces of paper you loose before you get the chance to edit your tracklog? i’d like to hear from people who use an ifinder for geotagging photos, i’d probably sell my magellan on ebay again:)

map, tracklog, gpsFoto, gpsBabel, for reference.

posting for reference and the inhabitants of the server-wg. after some (homesick?) puttying i got the necessary perl modules installed ( perl -MCPAN -e “install Chocolate::Belgian” )to use gpsPhoto.
i also installed gpsbabel to convert magellans sd-card gps files to gpx. this goes like:
gpsbabel -i magellan -f 2006-02-24 -o gpx -F 2006-02-24.gpx
after that you can use gpsBabel to write the positions into the exif data. this goes like:
perl gpsPhoto.pl –dir galleryfotos/albums/india/ –gpsfile tracklogs/2006-02-11.gpx –maxtimediff 2500
you see, i hat to raise the maxtimediff to something quite raw. almost an hour. the reason for this is that my tracklog was not detailed enough. i found some option and i hope the following logs will be more ‘to the point’.
then you can ‘edit photo’ in gallery and click on ‘get from exif’ e voila, there should be a pin on the map.
i didn’t figure out if there is a way to kind of ‘draw a track’ on the google map. the api has it, but how do you do it with galerys google map module? i think i won’t find out while i’m in india:)

ps: to check the variance:

making the cable worked like this. so the firmware is upgraded now, the menu entry ‘card utilities’ appeared magically and i am happy again. matuschek explains how to make a cable that also powers the device from a 12 v source. i didn’t need this, i needed an old serial mouse, tape and a good friend with a windows installation. i didn’t want to try if it runs on wine, you’ll understand.
while searching i found this . this is for the explorist 100 – you can get your waypoints out there as well apparently…
